Nature is still laughing...
Celery. It's everywhere. And what I don't get is why. It's a nasty tasting, stringy vegetable and yet it's in everything. Most TV dinners, canned soups, etc... always say something along the lines of "with vegetables." By this, of course, they mean celery, carrots, and if you're really good a pepper or two. Is there something wrong with using another veggie? Or is there some unknown law stating all foods that come "with vegetables" MUST contain celery? (Punishable by death from increased celery intake.) And it's strange flavor lingers for far too long. Nothing can really get rid of said flavor unless the celery is soaked/cooked in something and in microscopic-size pieces-like those canned soups. In other words, not much really makes it taste any better. I think it's just one of those mistake vegetables, like brussels sprouts, squash and spinach, that came about when nature got really bored and wanted a good laugh. I bet it was thinking "I need a good laugh so let's make some really foul tasting vegetables that kids will be forced to eat because their parents swear it's good for them!" And so it came to pass that on the day nature became bored, celery was born.
Then again, celery does have some high points. It's got that really funky shape that you can fill with stuff. And it's good for science experiments, too. I remember in grade school we did this experiment where you put a stalk of celery in colored water overnight and it would get absorbed, which had something to do with photosynthesis. So yeah, I'm sure there are other uses for this vegetable because eating it sure isn't an option.
