Ah yes, the Christmas season-a time for peace on earth and goodwill to all,
where everyone is suddenly happy and polite to everyone they meet. Not me,
I'm stuck in a video store in a mall. While everyone else is out shopping
and having fun, I'm trapped in this tiny hell-hole waiting on neverending streams of customers and yet I still have time for one thought-is it me or
is the general population dumbed down during the holidays? I AM the person
who's supposed to be friendly and helpful to the customers and don't get me
wrong-I do my job as I should, but people are idiots this time of the year.
How can someone be so stupid as to wait until Christmas Eve to buy presents?
Don't whine to me about not having time-most people work a typical 9-5 day.
And even then, there's still time in the day if you don't work those hours.
I'm the one who's working the long hours here with 9+ hour shifts-and I'm only 17. I'm on Christmas break right now, but does it feel like it? NO.
I have to work the 4 days in a row before Christmas and a few more after that. They complain about not enough hours in the day to get shopping done
while yet I don't have enough hours in the day to myself. People are so concerned for themselves, why don't you take a little time out to think
about how much time and effort retail employees are putting in so you can
buy your damn presents that you procrastinated so long to get. Behind that
cheerful facade we wear that's always saying "Thank you, have a nice holiday," is someone who either wants to scream or strangle someone.
Now let's look at the braindead, holiday-induced haze people are in right now. If anyone has been in a video store, you will know for a fact that movies are organized by section and usually alphabetically. The section
sign is huge for a reason and the employees are supposed to keep things neat.
And yet there are customers who are so completely out of it that when you say, "Gone in 60 Seconds is in the Action section over there," as you point
directly to the Action section which is straight ahead, they still are like, "Where?"
Don't get me wrong here either. While there are clueless customers and sometimes excessively evil ones, there are many more that really make you glad you get to work with people. Just the other day, I was talking to a customer about how busy it had been that day and how I'd rather be anywhere
but at the store when out of the blue he said he understood. Whether he really did or not, it made me feel just a little bit better to know that us
retail workers are appreciated. And then there are the customers who are
so grateful when you find something for them it just makes you smile knowing
that you've helped brighten someone's day.
I didn't type this long rant to complain about how pitiful and terrible my
life is. I, like many other retail employees, put in long hours for holiday
shoppers-hours we don't usually work, and I wanted to make people aware of
this fact. If it weren't for us, how could customers go into a mall to buy
things? So, in conclusion, please be polite and have patience with retail
workers, even when problems ensue. We're patient when you try to explain something or get angry with us, so why not exhibit the same courtesies to
us? Show us that you appreciate us! A kind word or a sincere "Thank-you"
can do wonders.
